Neurodiversity-Affirming Language Guide

Working/ Live Version

First, a note about Why Language Matters: Language shapes the way we see ourselves and others. For neurodivergent people navigating systems and settings that weren’t built with them in mind, the language we use can profoundly affirm - or significantly invalidate - their experience and identity. It can signal safety, or danger, in spaces and relationships.

Language also reveals the biases and assumptions embedded deep in our habitual ways of thinking and being. This non-exhaustive guide is offered as a starting point - a way to begin examining the language and belief structures we’ve been conditioned into, and to move consciously and intentionally away from pathologizing, deficit-based models toward language that centers curiosity, dignity, and a respect for difference.
